The Trust

Vintage Trains is a charitable trust (previously known as Birmingham Railway Museum Trust). The Trust is the custodian of the Tyseley Collection of railway engines. The Collection belongs to 7029 Clun Castle Ltd which is a registered educational charity.

The Trust was established to preserve and demonstrate the steam locomotives. In 1999 it achieved its long held objective of running a regular steam train service on the national mainline railway network between Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon. Tyseley steam depot was originally built by the Great Western Railway for that purpose. So Vintage Trains continues Tyseley's historic traditions.

Museum activities have now ceased and the focus is now the Trust's two operating subsidiaries:

- Tyseley Locomotive Works - restoring, repairing maintaining steam locomotives, rolling stock and other classic heritage traction.

- Vintage Trains Ltd - running mainline steam excursions and the Shakespeare Exress.

Surplus income from rail tour tickets and event admissions is reinvested in preservation and maintainance of the Tyseley Collection.

Steam Train Excursions

Vintage Trains uses engines from the Tyseley Collection plus guest locomotives to haul steam excursions on the national mainline railway network. The Excursion Programme offers an attractive and varied choice of destinations. These tours make an excellent day out for both families and railway enthusiasts.

Shakespeare Express

The Shakespeare Express is a regular summer steam service that runs between Birmingham, Henley & Stratford-upon-Avon. This is a somewhat different experience to travelling on a preserved railway line. It captures the atmosphere of the 1950s holiday trains on the journey to Stratford, and then the romance of the steam express train on the trip to Birmingham. It has great appeal to families and is an affordable way of enjoying mainline steam. It is increasingly being used by coach and tour operators as an exciting new feature within their programme.

Summer 2015 will see the 17th season of this ever-popular steam train.

The vintage Trains Experience

Our passengers enjoy the sights, sounds and experiences of steam railway train travel of a bygone era running on the main line at realistic speeds. By patronising our trains they are also effectively joining with trustees, our small staff complement and our very able and professional volunteers to keep the heritage of mainline steam alive… join us by buying tickets… today!

We use our own train of coaches, which feature large picture windows and traditional ventilation, so that passengers can fully savour the steam train experience.

We offer Premier Dining Class and Club Class seats on most excursions to enhance your travel experience.

We have added a classic diesel locomotive to our fleet, which may be used for part of the journey on certain of our steam tours enabling us to organise day excursions to places further afield. These trips would otherwise not be possible using steam haulage alone on today's modern railway system. Occasionally we may run 'diesel only’ hauled tours.

We hope you will join us on the Shakespeare Express and some (or all!) of our day excursions from our varied programme of tours using classic steam, diesel or electric locomotives to haul the trains.

Corporate Events & Private Charters

VTL can provide complete trains (engine and coaches )for corporate bookings and private charter. From time to time engines and/or coaches (optionally fully stewarded) are hired to other tour companies.

Tyseley Locomotive Works & Open Days

Tyseley Locomotive Works restores, repairs, maintains and services locomotives and other rolling stock from the Tyseley Collection and those of other owners under contract. It mainatins the engineering tradition of the former Great Western locomotive depot & works at Tyseley.

The Works and Steam Depot are now only open to the public on pre-arranged Open Days. See Tyseley Open Day details >>

Tyseley Locomotive Works was the winner of HRA’s John Coiley Award for the work in re-streamlining Duchess of Hamilton

Vintage Tains also swept the board by winning the Steam Railway / Mike Notley 2010 Awards - triple success for VT & TLW featuring 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe that was painstakingly restored from a 'Barry wreck' by TLW.

Vintage Trains again swept the board by winning the Steam Railway / Mike Notley 2012 Awards - triple success for VT & TLW featuring 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe.

Vintage Trains Society

We have an active supporters group called the Vintage Trains Society. Members provide volunteer support assisting with events, restoration, stewarding on trains and fund raising. Indeed it would be impossible to run the trains without the dedicated band of volunteers. Why not consider becoming a member for a small annual subscription so that you may play a part in a growing heritage railway organisation providing leisure activities and nostalgic days out to the public using the main line rail network. You will also enjoy a number of membership benefits too.
