Itinerary
Designed by George Stephenson and Joseph Locke, the Grand Junction Railway opened for business on 4 July 1837, running for 82 miles (132 km) from Birmingham through Wolverhampton (via Perry Barr and Bescot), Stafford, Crewe, and Warrington, then via the existing Warrington and Newton Railway to join the Liverpool and Manchester Railway at a triangular junction at Newton (Earlestown).
To celebrate 175 years since the opening of this significant section of the West Coast Mainline, on our way out of Birmingham New Street Station we shall pass the site of the Grand Junction Railway's Curzon Street Station before following the original route of the GJR to Earlestown, turning onto the route of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway into Liverpool Lime Street Station.
In the afternoon, 6201 Princess Elizabeth will make a not-to-be-missed spirited departure through the tunnels and cuttings up to Edge Hill before turning south and heading back to the Midlands.
Commencing at Tyseley Warwick Road platform, the train picks up at Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton, Stafford and Crewe.
Steam hauled by 6201 “Princess Elizabeth”.
