Itinerary
Following our recent awe-inspiring and quite separate conquests of Shap and Ais Gill with 5043 “Earl of Mount Edgcumbe” and 6201 “Princess Elizabeth”, we have decided to pair the two engines together in a double-headed assault on the Cumbrian Mountains not to mention everyone’s ear-drums! Hopefully you will join us for some supercharged climbs of these famous Northern hills.
The outward journey will be diesel hauled to Carnforth where where 5043 and 6201 will join the train for the journey north to Carlisle, tackling the ferocious gradients of Grayrigg and Shap along the way. Following a break for lunch and shopping in Carlisle, the majesty of the Eden Valley and the Yorkshire Dales will provide the backdrop for the unlikely pair to pitch their might against the Midland Railway’s testing and severely graded 72 mile route from Carlisle to Settle Junction. Climbing to Ais Gill (at 1169 feet above sea level – still the highest point on the UK main line network), this world famous piece of Victorian engineering was opened to passengers in 1876. From Hellifield, our route takes us through Blackburn, Bolton and Manchester to Crewe on our way home to Tyseley.
