Kolhapur is one of the numerous three-cylinder Jubilee class locomotives designed by Sir William Stanier for express work on the London, Midland & Scottish Railway. Kolhapur was one of the batch built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in 1934.

No.5593 worked all over the LMS system from St. Pancras to Derby, Nottingham and Manchester, from Leeds to Carlisle and from London to Birmingham and Bristol.

The locomotives were given the LMS power classsifcation 5XP and were often referred to as 5X's. In BR days the classification was changed to 6P5F.

Kolhapur had the distinction of hauling the train carrying Sir Winston Churchill from Liverpool on his return from the North Atlantic Treaty talks with President Roosevelt in the USA in 1942.

No.5593 was withdrawn from Holbeck shed in Leeds in 1967 and has since been completely overhauled and returned to main line use in LMS maroon livery - the inaugural run being at the head of HRH The Duke of Gloucester's Royal Train from Tyseley to Birmingham Moor Street on 5th June 1985.

The engine has visited a number of preserved railway lines including the East Lancs Railway, the Great Central Railway, Llangollen and the Battlefield line, Shackerstone. It has also swapped identities and liveries several times including assuming the identity of 5552 Silver Jubilee complete with stainless steel dome cover, numerals and boiler bands. It has also been paired with a Fowler tender as a number of Jubilees were.

The engine is currently in need of a full overhaul.
