Introduction
It has been almost 3 years since Tyseley Locomotive Works finished its painstaking 13 year rebuild of this legendary Great Western Castle class locomotive - 5043 ‘Earl of Mount Edgcumbe’. After many years when the GWR’s famous Castle class locomotives have not always been at their best on the main line preservation scene, 5043 has at last ably demonstrated just what the Castles were capable of performing, with stunning runs over the testing hills at Shap and Ais Gill, as well as visiting its old haunts on the GWR’s main line to recreate ‘The Bristolian’ express, Britain’s fastest steam train of the 1950’s.
This comprehensive book tells much of the story of how the Castles came to be designed and built, before going on to recount the detailed story of 5043’s history during the period of GWR and British Railways ownership. Further chapters detail how the locomotive was repaired, the processes necessary to return the locomotive to main line operation and comprehensive logs of some of its most outstanding performances since its return to the main line.
Written by the team of Bob Meanley, Michael Reyner and Mike Notley, their in depth association with the locomotive over a long period gives added authority to this volume.
